St Kilda Pier

The St Kilda Pier is one of Melbourne’s greatest icons, a special place for locals and the scene of many summers for a lot of Victorians.

At almost 50 years old, the pier is reaching the end of its design life. 

In peak season, it hosts more than 6,000 visitors a day and simply does not have the facilities to cope.

We’re rebuilding the pier and adding more green space to boost tourism and maintain the landmark for generations to come.

An investment of $50.3 million will deliver a new design, providing visitors with more open space and safer swimming spots, while also preserving the historic kiosk.

The rebuilt pier will curve out into the bay, featuring a penguin viewing area, sheltered areas, new toilets and tiered seating with access to the water.

The famous kiosk, first built in 1904, was destroyed in an arson attack in 2003. After the fire, the Victorian Government rebuilt the kiosk to the original plans and now we will make sure that the kiosk is the centrepiece of the new pier.

The design will also protect the St Kilda penguin colony, while providing locals and tourists alike a better place to watch the little penguins when they waddle to their rock homes after sunset.

The pier is a much-loved symbol of St Kilda, and this design was selected after an extensive community consultation process.

Work on the new St Kilda Pier will soon begin with the appointment of Simpson Constructions as the lead construction partner following a two-stage public tender process.

The current pier will remain open for visitors to enjoy until the new pier is fully functional in late 2024.
